SolarSPELL began partnering with HOPI Cancer Support Services (HCSS) in 2023 to provide their patient navigators and health educators with easily accessible and culturally relevant resources to use in their cancer education outreach and case management on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. The project was initiated by Aurelia Taylor, an ASU Doctor of Nursing Practice student and member of the Hopi Tribe, as part of her capstone. After several months of curating content to meet their needs, Aurelia and our team led a train-the-trainer with HCSS in February 2024. This was the first time SolarSPELL was able to partner directly with an Indigenous community and the first time our Health Library was used within the U.S.
The Hopi Health Collection, building on our general Health Library, focuses on resources for patients and community health workers (including patient navigators) that provide accurate, up-to-date information on cancer — particularly ovarian, breast, cervical and colon cancer. Additionally, the collection is localized for the Hopi community and specifically relevant to community members served by HOPI Cancer Support Services. You can find a variety of infographics, pamphlets, fact sheets, videos and research articles.
