Throughout 2018, the SolarSPELL team collaborated with Tonto Creek Camp in Arizona to assess the camp’s content needs, to build partnerships, and to curate content for the creation of a brand new SolarSPELL digital library version: the SolarSPELL AZ Natural Resources library. SolarSPELL officially launched the AZ Natural Resources library and pilot phase at Tonto Creek Camp in the Summer of 2019 to provide educational resources complementing four camp modules: Stream and Pond, Archery, an Ecology Hike, and Astronomy.
The collaboration between Tonto Creek Camp and SolarSPELL provides youth attending outdoor camps with the opportunity to learn hands-on in nature, while simultaneously enhancing their knowledge through digital resources provided on SolarSPELL digital libraries. Participating in these outdoor modules and activities can enrich the physical and mental well-being of youth throughout their lives. Furthermore, this interactive approach of incorporating SolarSPELL libraries helps students to develop digital and information literacy through the process, while instilling in Arizona’s youth a love for both nature and STEM disciplines.
