In 2022, our team began working with the City of Phoenix Fire Department’s Community Assistance Program to develop the SolarSPELL AZ Crisis Response library, with the goal of providing digital libraries to crisis response units to help them share information with residents when they arrive on a scene. Rather than relying solely on handouts, SolarSPELL allows responders to share multimedia resources that people can download right to their device. In addition to adding the city’s existing crisis responses resources to the new library, we also enlisted the help of ASU nursing students to adapt these materials to make them more accessible for folks with low literacy. The SolarSPELL AZ Crisis Response library also contains a child trauma toolkit of games and drawing modules that responders can use to help soothe kids on a scene. We officially launched the project in October 2024 with both crisis response and behavioral health units.
